How we measure

How we measure pools from satellite imagery.

PoolSavr locates your pool on aerial imagery, traces its waterline, and computes footprint, perimeter, interior surface area, and gallons — the numbers every honest quote is built on.

Where this came from

I measured pools for years with an analog wheel — analog on purpose, because it works underwater, and steps and benches do not measure themselves.

When I learned how accurate satellite measurement had become, I taught myself to code and built a system to trace pools from imagery. Then I did what I had always done: verified it on the ground.

Over a couple of years of measuring real pools and checking them against the wheel, it held under a 3% margin of error — and most of that margin is the image, not the math: resolution, shade, tree cover.

Step by step

The measurement is simple because the order is strict.

Your address becomes a location.

We geocode the address and pull the aerial imagery for your parcel.

The parcel boundary keeps us honest.

We check the property line first — so we never measure your neighbor's pool. It sounds obvious. It's the step that makes everything after it trustworthy.

The waterline gets traced.

Your pool's outline is traced point by point on the imagery — every curve, every corner, the actual shape of your actual pool, not a rectangle standing in for it.

The math runs on the real Earth.

Area and perimeter are computed geodesically — on the planet's true curved surface, not a flat screen grid. It's the difference between measuring and eyeballing.

Depth comes from you — on purpose.

The one dimension satellite can't see is depth. That's fine: you know your pool's depth. Contractors don't — they guess and verify on site.

The numbers every quote needs.

Footprint, perimeter, and with your depth: interior surface area — floor plus walls — and gallons, the number chemistry and heaters are sized on.

Limits

What we can see — and what we honestly cannot.

Depth is invisible from above.

We ask you. That answer turns footprint into interior surface area.

Deck condition cannot be judged from imagery.

Deck work is always flagged for an on-site inspection instead of priced from a measurement — the material and condition mix is too variable.

The image has an accuracy band.

Resolution, shade, and tree cover set the ceiling. Clear image, careful trace: under 3%. Heavy tree cover over the pool: we tell you, not pretend.

Pricing

Where the prices come from.

The measurement feeds a pricing catalog our founder built and maintains: fifteen categories of pool work, seven different pricing structures, real market rates — the way he priced jobs for fifteen years as a top-tier contractor.

We do not publish the catalog; we apply it to your measured pool and show you your number. Averages guess. This does not.

FAQs

Measurement questions.

How accurate is the measurement, really?
Under a 3% margin of error in our founder’s years of ground-truthed use — verified against physical wheel measurements on real jobs. The margin lives in image quality: resolution, shade, tree cover.
What if trees cover part of my pool?
Then part of the trace is judgment, and we say so. Confidence travels with the measurement — a clear-image trace and a partially obscured one are not presented as equally certain.
Can you measure my pool if it is a weird shape?
Weird shapes are the point. Averages assume rectangles; the trace follows your actual waterline, kidney, lagoon, or otherwise.
Why do you ask for my depth instead of estimating it?
Because you know it and satellites do not. Your answer turns footprint into interior surface area — the number your quote is actually priced on.
Do you measure the pool without my address?
No — the address is how we find your pool and only your pool. The parcel check exists so the measurement is yours, not your neighbor’s.
“Water is the most destructive force on the planet. It's only through educated construction and relentless preventative maintenance that we may contain it without it destroying everything around us.”

National averages can’t price your pool. They don’t know its size.

Enter your address and we’ll measure your actual pool from satellite imagery — surface area, perimeter, gallons — and price your project the way a premium contractor would. Free, about two minutes, and the measurement is yours either way.
