Pebble is the original exposed-aggregate finish: cement carrying full-size natural pebbles, applied over a waterproofing membrane, then acid-washed the next day to expose the stone.
The membrane matters. Pebble's aggregate makes the surface non-waterproof, so unlike plaster, every pebble job includes a membrane beneath it.
Lifespan
How long it really lasts.
Here’s what fifteen years taught me about lifespan numbers: they’re chemistry numbers, not material numbers. Commercial pools use the same materials as your backyard pool and routinely outlast it — for two reasons. Commercial pools can’t use pigment, which is the maximum-lifespan version of any surface. And their water is monitored daily, often by injection systems that correct drift a drip at a time. Your pool gets a weekly visit, and the tech spikes the chemicals hard enough to last until next week — and that spiking is what eats surfaces. I’ve seen white plaster from the 1980s still looking good under spot-on chemistry, and ten-year-old finishes destroyed by one bad pool guy. So read every range below as “with decent chemistry” — and know that the one-year manufacturer warranty exists because they can’t see your water.

A word about brands.
You’ll hear brand names — Pebble Tec, StoneScapes, and others. I’ve installed both. Chemically they’re the same product; which one your contractor uses mostly comes down to their distributor relationship, and warranty terms differ by brand and installer certification. Pick the system your contractor installs every week. Don’t pick your contractor to chase a brand.

Why is pebble the most expensive common finish?
Premium aggregate, a two-day application with an acid-wash step, and a waterproofing membrane plaster does not need.
Can pebble go over my existing plaster?
The existing surface still gets prepped, hollows addressed, and the membrane goes down before pebble. There is no shortcut version worth having.
Does pebble crack less than plaster?
Surface durability is better, but structural cracks come from under the pool, not from the finish. No surface prevents them.
