Who should pick Glass-bead finish
- The pool is the centerpiece and the budget says so.
- You want aggregate longevity with the smoothest feel in the category.
Premium aggregate tier
Published figure, not ours: $6–$15/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25)Published generic guides group glass blends inside the broader aggregate bucket. The exact number is driven by the blend: glass content climbs the price tiers inside each system.
Material
| Pool size | Footprint (sq ft) | Interior surface @ 5 ft (sq ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 14×28 | 392 | 812 |
| 16×32 | 512 | 992 |
| 18×36 | 648 | 1,188 |
Glass bead is the same exposed-aggregate system as pebble - membrane, cement, aggregate, exposure - with polished glass beads as some or all of the stone.
The glass is smoother than pebble, dramatic under sunlight and pool lighting, and the most expensive thing you can put in the mix.
Lifespan
Here’s what fifteen years taught me about lifespan numbers: they’re chemistry numbers, not material numbers. Commercial pools use the same materials as your backyard pool and routinely outlast it — for two reasons. Commercial pools can’t use pigment, which is the maximum-lifespan version of any surface. And their water is monitored daily, often by injection systems that correct drift a drip at a time. Your pool gets a weekly visit, and the tech spikes the chemicals hard enough to last until next week — and that spiking is what eats surfaces. I’ve seen white plaster from the 1980s still looking good under spot-on chemistry, and ten-year-old finishes destroyed by one bad pool guy. So read every range below as “with decent chemistry” — and know that the one-year manufacturer warranty exists because they can’t see your water.
Glass-bead systems are aggregate finishes and share pebble's honest range: 15-20+ years with the same chemistry caveats. You are buying feel and light, not extra years over pebble.
Brands
You’ll hear brand names — Pebble Tec, StoneScapes, and others. I’ve installed both. Chemically they’re the same product; which one your contractor uses mostly comes down to their distributor relationship, and warranty terms differ by brand and installer certification. Pick the system your contractor installs every week. Don’t pick your contractor to chase a brand.
