Salt Water Pool Conversion

A salt system does not remove chlorine from your pool — it manufactures chlorine on site from dissolved salt, so you stop buying and handling it directly. The water still contains chlorine; it is simply produced continuously in small amounts rather than shocked in periodically.

What actually changes

A salt chlorine generator — often just called a "salt system" or "salt cell" — dissolves a relatively small amount of salt (roughly a tenth the concentration of seawater) into the pool, then passes that water through a cell that uses electrolysis to convert the salt into chlorine. That chlorine sanitizes the water exactly as bottled or tablet chlorine would; the pool is still a chlorine pool.

What changes is how the chlorine gets there. Instead of adding tablets, liquid or granular shock by hand, the system produces a steady, low-level supply continuously while the pump runs, and a control board lets you dial the output up or down.

What it genuinely improves

  • Softer-feeling water. The lower, steadier chlorine level and dissolved salt commonly feels softer on skin and eyes than a pool dosed in periodic spikes.
  • Less handling of chlorine products. No lifting buckets of shock or tablets, and less exposure to concentrated chemicals.
  • More consistent sanitizer level. Continuous low-level production avoids the peaks and troughs of manual dosing, which tends to mean fewer algae blooms from a lapsed dose.
  • Often pairs well with automation. Most salt systems integrate with an automation controller, so output can be scheduled and monitored rather than checked by hand.

What it does not do

This is where salt systems get oversold, and it is worth being direct about it.

  • It does not eliminate chemical maintenance. You still balance pH, alkalinity and stabilizer, and the cell itself needs periodic cleaning of scale buildup.
  • It does not prevent algae on its own. A poorly maintained salt pool goes green exactly like a poorly maintained chlorine pool — the cell has an output ceiling and cannot out-produce a real algae bloom.
  • It is not chemical-free. The pool contains chlorine at all times, generated locally instead of added from a container.
  • It can accelerate corrosion. Salt is mildly corrosive to unprotected metal — ladders, handrails, heater components and some deck fasteners can wear faster unless rated for salt exposure.

What conversion involves

  • Salt cell and control board

    The core hardware: the cell that generates chlorine and the panel that controls output.

  • Initial salt addition

    Enough salt to reach the target concentration, dissolved gradually as the pump runs.

  • Plumbing tie-in

    The cell is plumbed into the equipment pad after the filter and heater, in the return line.

  • Electrical connection

    The control board needs a power connection, and in some setups a dedicated circuit.

  • Equipment compatibility check

    Confirming the heater, lights and fittings are salt-rated, or budgeting to replace what is not.

No. A salt system generates chlorine from dissolved salt via electrolysis — the pool is sanitized by chlorine either way. What changes is that you stop adding it by hand and the level stays more consistent.
