Pool Pump Not Working

Pool pumps fail in a handful of recognisable ways, and most of the useful diagnosis can be done without tools — breaker, baskets, water level, and the sound it makes.

Is it urgent?

Not usually. A pool without circulation for a day or two is not harmed, though algae growth accelerates in warm weather. It becomes worth acting on quickly once water clarity starts to decline, since a green pool costs considerably more to bring back than a clear one.

Work through this in order

  • Check the breaker first. A tripped breaker is a genuinely common cause of "the pump is dead". If it trips again immediately after resetting, stop and call a technician — that is an electrical fault, not a nuisance trip.
  • Check the timer. Confirm it has power and the schedule has not been lost, which happens after any power outage on some older timers.
  • Listen to what it does when powered. Silence points at the motor or the electrical supply. Humming without turning points at a seized impeller or a failed capacitor. Grinding points at bearings.
  • Check the baskets. A blocked pump or skimmer basket is the single most common cause of weak or no flow.
  • Check the water level. Below the skimmer mouth means the pump is drawing air rather than water.
  • Look at the pump lid o-ring. Dried or cracked, this is a very common and very cheap cause of failure to prime.

What not to do

  • Do not open the motor housing. Electrical work inside the motor is for a qualified technician.
  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that re-trips. That is reporting a genuine fault. Repeated resets risk further damage.
  • Do not run the pump dry. A pump trying to draw air with no water present will overheat and can destroy the seal within minutes.
