Pool Leak Repair
What a leak repair costs depends almost entirely on where the leak is. A skimmer seal is a few hundred dollars; a buried pressure line under a deck can be several thousand. That is why detection comes first.
Cost by location
The same volume of water loss can cost ten times as much to fix depending on where it is escaping. Access is most of the variance.
| Location | Repair method | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Skimmer or skimmer throat | Reseal, or replace the skimmer body | $300–$900 |
| Return fitting | Reseal or replace the fitting | $200–$700 |
| Light niche or conduit | Reseal the niche and conduit penetration | $300–$1,000 |
| Main drain | Reseal, or cap and reroute | $1,000–$4,000 |
| Plumbing, accessible | Cut out and replace the section | $500–$1,500 |
| Plumbing, under deck or hardscape | Cut deck, repair, patch | $1,500–$3,500 |
| Plumbing, reroute instead of excavate | New line run around the obstruction | $1,200–$3,000 |
| Shell crack | Epoxy injection or staple repair | $500–$3,500 |
| Vinyl liner tear | Patch, or replace the liner | $150–$500 / $3,800–$6,500 |
Rerouting is often cheaper than excavating
When a leak is in a buried line under a deck or patio, the instinct is to dig down to it. Frequently the cheaper answer is to abandon the damaged line and run a new one around the obstruction.
It avoids cutting and patching hardscape, avoids the risk of finding the concrete in worse condition than expected, and gives you new pipe rather than a repaired section of old. Ask for it to be quoted alongside excavation — a contractor who only offers one option is not necessarily offering the cheaper one.
Why fixing it promptly matters
A slow leak feels like a tolerable inconvenience — top the pool up, accept the water bill. The reason not to leave it is what the water does underground.
- Sub-base erosion. Escaping water washes fines out of the soil supporting your deck, creating voids that later show up as settlement and cracking.
- Shell support. In serious cases the soil supporting the pool shell itself is affected, which is a far more expensive problem than the leak.
- Chemistry cost. Constantly diluted water means constantly re-adding chemicals, and unstable chemistry shortens the life of the interior finish.
- Equipment damage. A pool that drops below the skimmer lets the pump draw air, which destroys pump seals and can burn out a motor.
- It rarely improves. Water flowing through a small opening enlarges it.
What to expect from the process
- Detection first. Do not let anyone excavate without a located leak. $250–$600 well spent.
- Written scope. What is being repaired, how, and what happens if the fault turns out to be elsewhere.
- Access and reinstatement in writing. Who cuts the deck, who patches it, and whether the patch will match.
- A pressure test afterwards. The line should be re-tested to confirm the repair holds before anything is backfilled.
- A follow-up bucket test. Do your own, a week later. It confirms the loss has actually stopped.
What this project needs measured
Measurements are only requested when they change the price of the work you selected. Everything below is collected inside the estimator — you can enter dimensions you already know or measure as you go.
Required
No measurement required
This project is diagnosed from symptoms and equipment details rather than dimensions.
What the estimator will ask you
- Whether the leak has been professionally located
- Where it was found, if known
- How much water you are losing per day
- Pool construction type
- What sits above the suspected line — deck, patio, landscaping
- Photos of the area and equipment pad
- How urgent this is
How to read a PoolSavr estimate
- Step 1
Instant estimate
Based on your project selections and general pricing assumptions. Useful for deciding whether a project is realistic.
- Step 2
Measured estimate
Uses your pool, spa, or deck dimensions to price the work against the areas actually being resurfaced, tiled, or replaced.
- Step 3
Contractor proposal
Prepared by a licensed professional after inspecting the site. This is the only number that becomes a contract.
PoolSavr is an estimating and matching platform. We do not perform pool work ourselves — licensed local professionals do. Contractors pay PoolSavr for qualified project leads, which is how the estimating tools stay free for homeowners. Frequently asked questions
- How much does pool leak repair cost?
- It depends almost entirely on location. A skimmer or return fitting runs $200–$900. A buried plumbing line under a deck is $1,500–$3,500 plus deck reinstatement. A shell crack is $500–$3,500. That spread is exactly why professional detection comes first.
- Can a pool leak be fixed without digging?
- Often. Fittings, skimmers and light niches are repaired from inside the pool. For buried lines, rerouting a new pipe around the obstruction is frequently cheaper than excavating hardscape — ask for both options to be quoted.
- How urgent is a slow pool leak?
- Not an emergency, but do not leave it for a season. Escaping water erodes the sub-base under your deck and can eventually cause settlement that costs far more than the leak repair. It also destabilises water chemistry and, if the level drops below the skimmer, damages the pump.
- Will my deck have to be cut?
- Only if the leak is in a line running underneath it and rerouting is impractical. If cutting is needed, get the concrete patch quoted as part of the job — it is commonly omitted from the initial number and adds $400–$1,500.
- Do leak sealant products work?
- Sometimes, for very small shell leaks. They also circulate through and can coat your filter and plumbing. Treat them as a considered option for a known small leak, not as a first step before diagnosis.
