Pool Deck Resurfacing

Resurfacing applies a new wearing surface over your existing deck slab. It transforms how a deck looks and feels for a fraction of replacement cost — provided the slab underneath is sound.

Resurfacing versus replacement

This is the whole decision, and getting it wrong is expensive in both directions. Resurfacing over a failing slab hides the problem for a season or two and wastes the money. Replacing a sound slab spends two to three times what was needed.

The test is whether the concrete is structurally sound. An overlay is a wearing surface, not a structural element — it adds no strength and cannot bridge movement. If the slab is stable and the cracks are cosmetic, resurfacing is genuinely the right answer.

Surface options

All of these go over a prepared existing slab. They differ mainly in texture, heat and how well they hide what is underneath.

  • Acrylic / knockdown texture

$6–$9 per sq ft. The workhorse cool-deck finish. Textured for slip resistance, light-coloured, and meaningfully cooler than bare concrete.

  • Micro-topping / skim coat

$7–$11 per sq ft. A thin cementitious layer giving a smooth modern finish. Shows underlying cracks more readily than textured systems.

  • Stamped overlay

$9–$14 per sq ft. Textured and coloured to imitate stone or tile. The most decorative option and the most dependent on installer skill.

  • Paver overlay

$11–$18 per sq ft. Thin pavers laid over the existing slab. Individually replaceable, and it tolerates minor slab movement better than a bonded coating.

The problems an overlay will not fix

Worth being blunt about, because these are the failures that generate disappointed homeowners a year later.

  • Structural cracks. A crack caused by movement will telegraph through any bonded overlay, usually within the first year.
  • Settlement. If a section has dropped, an overlay follows the new contour. It cannot level a slab.
  • Bad drainage. A deck sloping toward the house keeps sloping toward the house. Regrading requires removing concrete.
  • A failed sub-base. Voids under the slab keep growing. Resurfacing seals the symptom in.

What affects the price

  • Deck square footage. The primary driver. Measure the actual walking surface, not the whole yard.
  • Surface system. Roughly a three-fold spread between a basic acrylic texture and a paver overlay.
  • Preparation required. Grinding, crack routing, patching and cleaning. A previously coated deck that needs stripping costs considerably more to prepare.
  • Condition of the existing slab. Crack repair and spall patching before the overlay goes down.
  • Complexity. Curves, steps, raised areas and multiple levels all add labour per square foot.
  • Coping interface. How the new surface terminates at the coping affects both appearance and how well the expansion joint survives.

How the job runs

  • Assessment and preparation. One to two days. Cleaning, grinding, routing and filling cracks, patching spalls. Most of the durability is decided here.
  • Primer and base coat. One day, weather permitting. Overlays need dry conditions and a temperature window.
  • Texture or pattern. One to two days depending on system and area.
  • Colour and sealer. One day, plus cure time before foot traffic.
  • Cure. Typically two to three days before normal use, longer before furniture goes back.

What this project needs measured

Measurements are only requested when they change the price of the work you selected. Everything below is collected inside the estimator — you can enter dimensions you already know or measure as you go.

Required

Pool deck area

Deck work is priced by square footage, and the condition of the existing slab changes the preparation cost.

Only if it applies

Pool perimeter (linear feet)

Tile and coping are priced by the linear foot around the pool edge.

Work homeowners commonly add to this project

Combining these while the pool is already drained and staged is usually cheaper than returning for them later. You can add or remove any of them inside the estimator.

  • Coping replacement
  • Drainage correction
  • Expansion joint repair

How to read a PoolSavr estimate

  1. Step 1

    Instant estimate

Based on your project selections and general pricing assumptions. Useful for deciding whether a project is realistic.

  2. Step 2

    Measured estimate

Uses your pool, spa, or deck dimensions to price the work against the areas actually being resurfaced, tiled, or replaced.

  3. Step 3

    Contractor proposal

Prepared by a licensed professional after inspecting the site. This is the only number that becomes a contract.

PoolSavr is an estimating and matching platform. We do not perform pool work ourselves — licensed local professionals do. Contractors pay PoolSavr for qualified project leads, which is how the estimating tools stay free for homeowners. Frequently asked questions

How much does pool deck resurfacing cost?
Typically $6–$14 per square foot depending on the system. For a 600 sq ft deck that is roughly $3,600–$8,400. Full replacement runs $12–$26 per square foot, so around $7,200–$15,600 for the same area.
How long does a resurfaced deck last?
Eight to fifteen years for a well-prepared acrylic or stamped overlay, and longer for pavers. Sun exposure, freeze-thaw cycling and how well the surface was prepared are the main variables — preparation matters more than the product.
Will resurfacing cover my cracks?
Cosmetic hairline cracks, yes. Structural cracks caused by movement will reappear through the overlay, usually within a year. Route-and-fill treatment helps but does not stop a slab that is still moving.
Is a resurfaced deck cooler to walk on?
Usually yes. Light-coloured acrylic cool-deck systems are meaningfully cooler underfoot than bare grey concrete, and colour choice matters more than the specific product. In hot climates this is often the main reason people resurface.
Can I resurface only part of the deck?
Physically yes, but matching is difficult — new overlay next to old rarely blends, even in the same colour. If budget forces staging, break at a natural boundary such as an expansion joint or a step.
